The Grand Duchy of Karameikos
The Grand Duchy of Karameikos was formerly Traladara, a loose confederation of independent baronies that was once under the control of neighboring Thyatis.
In 376, Stefan Karameikos, a Thyatin nobleman, spent his family fortune on mercenary armies, invaded and conquered the seaport city of Marilenev.
Armies swearing fealty to Karameikos set up garrisons in most of the land’s larger communities and the duke renamed the country after himself. He renamed Marilenev to Specularum, a more Thaytin moniker, and was recognized by the emperor of Thyatis as an indpendent nation.
Although effectively a kingdom, Thyatis never officially called it such and thus it retains the name Grand Duchy. The ruling barons were allowed to keep their lands upon swearing loyalty to Karameikos. Those who didn’t were routed and Karameikos installed his cronies as rulers.
The ruling nobles maintained the laws and customs of the Traladarans in order to maintain peace and security, but many of the conquered peoples resent their rulers and secretly plot to one day overthrow them.
While the allies of Karameikos maintain control in the settled portions of the land, the heavily forested wilderness is uncontrolled and home to rustic human villages and towns as well as some elf and goblin communities. It is also the ancient home of lycanthropes, vampires and other creatures of the night.
